Dragons in Time
Tom Moser
Thomas Moser is a tattoo artist local to Long Beach and owner of Port City Tattoo. The primary focus in his artwork are Eastern depictions of dragons. These geographical-specific beasts are characterized by their long snake-like body, clawed feet, reptilian facial features, and horned mane. Although varying in exact depiction between pieces, much like the variation in portrayals of dragons, his common themes of ferocity and boldness remain prominent. His style is defined by his use of black space and red-green complementary palette that both bring out a sense of intimidation from each of his works. This is likely the allure of his work as a tattoo artists. Those seeking a Moser piece pursue the same perception of power that dragons have upheld throughout time.
As stated previously, Moser is a Long Beach native. His inspiration comes greatly from what he describes as “outsider culture” that’s associated with punk rock or heavy metal music. The boldness of these muses explain the same boldness found in his art, consisting of snarling dragons, tigers, and other beasts.
The choice of medium for Moser is ink and skin, a traditional tattoo. Sticking to traditional styles, he utilizes bold lines and colors, reminiscent of the arm of a harden motorcyclist. Shading techniques with tattoos are limited, as the artist is often limited to a singular color rather than a family of them. To compensate for this limitation, Moser stipples to create a shaded effect for both his black and white and color tattoos.
Moser connects his passion for the punk rock and artistic scenes in his work. It is no coincidence he finds himself booked for tattoo appointments of his signature style.
